PRE TRIP REPORT: PORTO, PORTUGAL CITY BREAK WITH KIDS

THE DETAILS

WHERE: Porto, Portugal for 5 nights

WHEN: Spring

WEATHER: 9-17 degrees centigrade

FLIGHT:   Easyjet

ACCOMMODATION: Flores Village Hotel and Spa

We had 2 key criteria – a hotel in the old town and an indoor pool in case it rains as we are going in Spring rather than the height of summer. Flores Village has fantastic reviews on Tripadvisor and we loved the look of the outdoor space for sitting out with an aperitif in the evening. It also has a spa~bonus!

The hotel looks fabulous and we are really excited to be staying in a historic building in the heart of the old town. Often we stay in very basic accommodation so this is a lovely treat for us to stay somewhere more luxurious. I will report back!

ITINERARY

I love a combination of having some ideas in advance and allowing the opportunity to be spontaneous.  We don’t want every day scheduled – this is a holiday after all – but we want to be sure we have allowed time to do the things we most want to.We may go down the route of having everyone in the family having their choice for a day. This worked well for us in New York City.

This guide to Porto for families from Tripadvisor has given me lots of inspiration and food for thought! I can imagine on dds list will be the Livraria Lello the bookshop said to have inspired J K Rowling and famed for its architecture.

The Parque de Cidade will feature as an opportunity for an out doors run for the girls and the Serralves art museum.

On my list is the old town and Cais Da Ribeira I love strolling round absorbing the atmosphere, people watching and finding out about the city.

I am considering doing a food tour and like the look of this one Taste Porto . Have you ever done a food tour? What was it like and how did the kids get on – leave me a comment if you recommend this one! It takes 3.5 hours which sounds like the perfect leisurely pace for me – would it be too long for the kids? Not sure but would love to do it!

Lets hope the Portuguese custard tarts are included! #fans

Further afield I am considering a day trip to Lisbon. Actually on reflection perhaps we should have stayed fewer nights in Porto and had a night in Lisbon as its a 3 hour train journey away. I have had a brief stay in Lisbon before and would love to see more of the city.

Douro Valley is another option if we hire a car and head out of Porto to see some more of the area and of course the Port region!

We have 4 full days so if we have a day in Douro or Lisbon then DH, DDs and I will all get to choose our plans for the day on the other 3 days. Trying to please everyone here!

EATING:

La Copa ice creams will be on my dds wishlist. Porto strikes me as a real gourmet city though – let me know if you have a recommendation of somewhere that’s fancy enough to be fine dining for me and DH but suitable for the small people. Trying to strike a balance.   I love the look of the Wine Quay Bar for a romantic looking spot by the river

Port tasting is surely essential – you cant go to Porto and not sample the local vintages but fathoming how to accommodate kids with tasting drinks – haven’t tried it before!

If you have been to Porto let me know where you recommend to eat and to visit and what your kids enjoyed the most.

Hi Jo, oh how timely that I came across your post on Portugal because I’m planning to visit Portugal in Sept. I know it’s a long way more to go but we are trying to book flights months ahead to save money. As such, my friend and I are trying to read as much as we can to decide how many days we should stay in some cities in Portugal. Porto is definitely on the list – the library, egg tarts and port wine! 🙂 Cheers!

So glad that you had a great time! It’s such a lovely city – plenty to do but not so much that you feel you have to rush around everything. A lovely atmosphere, we liked the street musicians.
